Navarro Canoe Philosophy
Our goal is to provide you with a beautiful canoeing experience in a canoe that performs beautifully.
We provide only tested paddles and accessories that meet our high standards, will compliment your canoe and add to your experience.
Hand crafted Construction
Navarro canoes are completely hand crafted. It takes approximately 25 hours over a five day period to build your canoe. We use traditional methods of construction and integrate high quality materials when appropriate.
At this time we offer a fiberglass lay-up, a lay-up of Kevlar, and a hybrid option providing the best of both worlds (reduced weight, increase durability). We use only the finest Gel-Coat and vinyl ester resins. All Navarro hulls are reinforced with select cherry wood ribs. These wooden ribs ad strength and beauty to the canoe. The wide variety of grains assures individual character for each canoe we build. The ribs are thoroughly sealed in resin and a final layer of fiberglass is placed on the floor of the canoe.
The upper structures of all Navarro Canoes are crafted from select hardwoods, then oiled and hand rubbed to a fine finish. The large seats are laced in a snowshoe pattern with durable nylon proven for over thirty years.
Pride and attention to detail are taken in every step of the process. Thus creating a canoe which offers the warmth of wood and no more maintenance than any other wood trimmed boat.
History of Navarro Canoes
Navarro Canoe traces its root back to Lem Beach, Sr. who in 1955 developed, “a canoe that looks like a canoe.” Referring to the traditional wooden canoes then most popular.
The methods Lem developed he passed on to his grandsons and Vernon Pew brought his trade to the West Coast, where his canoes became renowned.
Vernon passed along his knowledge and passion of three generations to Ryan Allard, who is now the Production Director of Navarro.
Ryan has involved the love of his life with his passion for canoe building, and Jennifer Allard serves the company as the West Coast Director.
Navarro is lead by John Berry, an avid paddler, canoe builder and frequent boundary waters traveler, who is located near Minneapolis, Minnesota.
